The proposed book includes the best stories by Theodore Dreiser (1871—1945) from the author’s collection “Chains” in which the writer shows various psychological types of a personality. Among his heroes: a man whose avarice and narrowmindedness led him to insanity; a worker who tunnels under the river, and every time, coming down under the ground, he overcomes his fear of water element; an old Arab who roams the city in search of a narcotic plant sprout. Dreiser creates vivid images of men and women who try to come to understanding and, naturally, to find their happiness. In these stories, the author appears as an extraordinarily talented artist-psychologist who is first and foremost interested in the problems of morality. His analysis of the people’s thoughts and feelings astonishes with its depth, makes plunge deep in thought, confuses and at the same time carries away.

“Sister Carrie”, “An American Tragedy”, “Jennie Gerhardt” are the novels by Theodore Dreiser, well-known for the Ukrainian reader. In the collection “Phantom Gold” the best stories of the famous writer are presented in which the author reveals his talent not less violently than in his novels. In his stories, the author portrays different psychological types of people, faultfindingly analyses their thoughts and actions neither accusing nor excusing them. Dreiser's stories give cause for reflection; the reader has on his own to appreciate the deeds of the heroes who have unstable disposition and strive for the accomplishment of their wishes.

До пропонованої книги входять кращі оповідання Теодора Драйзера (1871—1945) з авторської збірки “Пута”, у яких письменник зображує певні психологічні типи особистості. Серед його героїв: чоловік, чия жадібність та обмеженість призвели до божевілля, робітник, що прокладає тунель під рікою і щоразу, спускаючись під землю, долає свій страх перед водною стихією, старий араб, що блукає містом у пошуках галузки наркотичної рослини. Драйзер створює яскраві образи чоловіків та жінок, що намагаються порозумітися між собою і, звісно, знайти щастя. У своїх оповіданнях автор постає перед нами як надзвичайно талановитий художник-психолог, якого передусім цікавлять питання моральності людини. Його аналіз людських думок та почуттів вражає глибиною, змушує замислитися, бентежить і водночас захоплює.
