To The Lighthouse

“To The Lighthouse” is one of the best-known novels by the British writer, a brilliant representative of modernistic prose Virginia Woolf (1882—1941). This work is to some degree autobiographical. The writer copied the main heroes — Mr and Mrs Ramsay — from her parents. That’s just they who represent in the novel two opposite worlds: male — cold, logic, impatient one, and female — the world of warmth, understanding, comfort, sympathy. In spite of this, the role of the characters in the novel is rather relative because Virginia Woolf’s style is unusual: she portrays not so much her heroes and their deeds, as thoughts, ideas, and moods, forming in this way a new psychological manner of writing and giving orienting points for all the modern literature.

A quick-tempered husband with a lot of character, eight children, regular guests and a lot of domestic affairs — such is the range of Mrs Ramsay's daily household chores, whose mission is to take care of people and help them find their happiness. However, having been tired of unimaginable disarray of human relations, she dies. The thing is that, according to the writer s idea, the time of sacrificial heroines had come to an end, and they were succeeded by the arrogant and emancipated ones whose ideal is not a family and children, but independence and self-realization in a great world.

“До маяка” — один із найвідоміших романів британської письменниці, яскравої представниці модерністської прози Вірджинії Вулф (1882—1941). Цей твір певною мірою автобіографічний. Головних героїв — містера та місіс Ремзі — авторка писала зі своїх батьків. Саме вони представляють у романі два протилежних світи: чоловічий — холодний, логічний, нетерплячий — та жіночий — світ тепла, розуміння, затишку, співчуття. Попри це, роль дійових осіб у романі досить відносна, бо стиль Вірджинії Вулф незвичний, вона зображує не стільки героїв та їхні вчинки, скільки думки, ідеї, настрої, формуючи в такий спосіб нову психологічну манеру письма і задаючи орієнтири для всієї сучасної літератури.
